“I liked the recipes in this book best. These are not cookies from the grocery store that you slice from a roll, this is real butter and fresh eggs.”— A reader

A companion piece to An Accidental Pioneer, this book is a charming memoir of childhood lived on a Depression days farm in Knox County, Indiana. Customs, chores, games children played before the days of absorption in video games and texting, and delicious down-home recipes from the kitchen of this national food industry corporate officer mark this book as a collector’s item.

Hermits were and are a particular favorite of Hoosiers. Here is Lorene’s family recipe for this cookie treat, served in her family at Christmas time only.

2 cups brown sugar; 1 cup butter softened; 4 eggs, lightly beaten; 2 tsp soda dissolved in a little water; 5 cups unsifted flour; 2 cups raisins; 1 cup chopped nuts; grated rind of 1 orange; 1 tsp nutmeg; 1 tsp. cinnamon; ¼ cup milk.
Cream butter and sugar; add eggs and soda. Add flour and remaining ingredients. Drop by teaspoonsful onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees about 10 minutes or until lightly browned and set.
